Meet me halfway
I’m into my second week of college so far and it’s been great. I noticed that I haven’t really shared about it so here I am today, sharing with you a glimpse of college life, just because I have a free Friday night.
Firstly, before we enter college (while we’re still in blue uniforms and carrying heavy backpacks), we basically have a huge idea on how college would be like. It’d be big, lotsa freedom, learning subjects you’ve never heard of before etc. But the reality is, college is not very different from high school. Not kidding.
Aside the air-conditions, lunch breaks and no uniforms, college is pretty much like high school. So, don’t get disappointed when you find out that college isn’t all that. One of the vast differences between college and high school is, in college, almost everyone is outspoken. Initiative. Active. In high school, you can get away with being the shy, quiet one who sits alone in a corner in class. In college, try doing that and you’ll be labelled a freak. Long story short, everyone speaks up in college. Even the quiet ones.
Before I entered college, I had the perception that college is mostly about fun. About social interaction. Oh how wrong I was. You have to study just as much as you have fun. The truth is, many people ‘forget’ that college is about studying too. We get so caught up in the idea of being college students that we leave studying in high school. Basically, Math in college is a deeper version of Add Math and English is well, how different can English be? English is just English lah. Essays, comprehension, like an old spoiled tape recorder.

One thing about college is, no one judges you. You can wear shorts up to your thighs, spaghetti stripes with your bra strap showing and Jesus’ sandals for all you care, and no one is gonna say anything. You can walk in 40 minutes late for class, no one is gonna say anything. You can forget to bring books, no one is gonna say anything. You can walk around college blocks playing your ukuleles (there IS such a group in college), and guess what, NO ONE IS GONNA SAY ANYTHING. Now isn’t that just awesome?
Truth of the matter is, you don’t have to try to be outstanding in college. Because no matter how hard you try, there is always another hotter girl. No matter how hard you try, there’ll always be a cooler hang out gang. No matter how hard you try, there is always someone else who has cooler gadgets than you. So all in all, you just become yourself in college. There is no need for impressing, no need for putting on a mask.
In college, no one tells what where you should do your exercises. No one tells you which book to write your notes in. You can write it all over your hand, for all they care.
In college you address your lecturer by their name, and not ‘teacher’.
In college you go for Consultation Hours to ask questions, not stop your lecturer by the side of the corridor to ask questions.
In college, everything is on powerpoint and not white board and markers.
In college, you print your own lecture notes and not expect the lecturer to photocopy for you.
In college, you wake up every morning and deal with the same “What to wear” question and end up stoning in front of your closet for 10 minutes.
In college, time passes so fast that you barely realised it’s Friday already.
In college, everyone speaks English.
In college, hand in your assignment 1 minute past the dateline and you get a zero.
In college, you start to realise that there are macam-macam ada people everywhere.
All in all, in college, you can be whoever you want to be.
In college, you discover your true self.
In college, you learn to accept and love people you don’t like.
In college, you find friends that will grow old together with you.
So, with all that’s said and done, how can you still not love college?

11 years and counting…
Some might call it overdose,
Others might call it overrated.
We probably don’t know everything about each other.
Maybe this is as far as it gets.
But one thing we do know.
Boyfriends come and go.
Flings come and go.
Some good friends might even come and go.
We fight, we yell, we scream.
We scold, we laugh, we cry.
We tease, we talk, we complain.
At the end of the day,
We still call each other out for lunch breaks.
We take pictures and then say “this is going up on your wedding day.”
We still sleepover (with no sleep)
And we still call each other best friends.

Whatever will be, will be
Que Sara Sara
Whatever will be, will be.
Not a very nice feeling to feel at the beginning of the year, when people are supposed to make resolutions, when people are all gang ho about the new year and when we all actually fool ourselves into believing that things are gonna be different this year.
I believe that there is no harm trying, no harm believing. But I also believe that we all come to a point where we just give up trying so hard and go with the flow. So yes, right now is a phase in my humble life where I just wanna sing Que Sara Sara and feel good about it.
So hey, cheers to going with the flow for a change!
